Roof Ridge

The very top peak of your roof where two slopes meet. Think of it like the spine of a book.

Ridge Vent

A hidden vent along the peak that lets hot, humid air escape your attic. Without it, heat and moisture get trapped and destroy your roof from the inside out.

Flashing

Metal pieces around chimneys, skylights, and vents that keep water from sneaking into the seams. Most roof leaks start where flashing fails. (Not shown in diagram)

Hip

The angled ridge where two roof slopes meet on the outside. Needs special cap shingles to seal the seam where those two planes come together.

Roof Deck

The plywood base everything sits on. If it's soft or rotted, it gets replaced before anything new goes on. Duke's Roofing: $60/sheet vs. $75–$125 from traditional contractors.

Roofing Underlayment

A waterproof layer between the plywood and your shingles. Your backup plan — if water gets past the shingles, this stops it. You'll choose yours in a later step.

Roof Valley

The V-shaped channel where two slopes meet. Water funnels here, so it's leak central. Gets extra protection with ice shield and sometimes metal flashing underneath.

Laminated Architectural Shingles

The most popular shingle type. Thicker and more textured than basic shingles, handles winds up to 130 mph, and looks way better. You'll pick yours in a later step.

Metal Drip Edge

An L-shaped metal strip along the edges that pushes water into your gutters instead of behind them. Prevents the wood underneath from rotting. Code-required.

Ice and Water Barrier

A sticky, fully waterproof membrane on the most leak-prone areas. Seals itself around every nail hole. Essential in NJ winters where ice dams push water uphill under shingles.

Eave

The bottom edge of your roof that hangs over the walls. Keeps rain off your siding. Also where ice dams form first, which is why ice shield goes here.

Undereave Vent

Vents under the eave that pull cool air into your attic. Works with the ridge vent (#2) to keep air flowing so your roof lasts longer and your energy bills stay lower.
